12 years’ a slave star Lupita Nyong’o took the world by storm when she won the coveted Oscar award. Women especially in Kenya were swept by the Lupita short hair effect and shaved to embrace and appreciate the natural African kinky hair.

Lupita is now on a mission to empower black women to appreciate and embrace their natural black hair. In a bid to accomplish this mission, Lupita who hails from Kenya is working on a book called ‘Sulwe’ which translates to a star in conjunction with Simon and Schuster Books which is due for release in January 2019.

On an interview with Porter magazine, the Hollywood star explained how she has lost on many job opportunities because of her hair and she feels that it’s time for her to change the narrative for black women. Natural African kinky hair has been for a long time viewed as not decent more especially in entertainment and fashion industry.

“My hair is something that, historically, has been shunned. I mean, how often do you hear ‘You can’t get a job with hail like that’?”

In the book, Lupita depicts a picture of a young girl in her native home who is struggling to find her identity by trying to bleach her skin. The five year-old  in turn embraces her dark skin tone and the beauty in it.
