American comedienne Tiffany Haddish is now officially an Eritrean. Haddish, who was born in Los Angeles to an African-American mother and an Eritrean father who entered the United States as a refugee, applied for and received citizenship of the country of her father’s birth.

Eritrea has begun its week-long celebrations in preparation for its 28th anniversary of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front having secured independence from Ethiopia’s military regime on May 24th.

On social media, famed photographer Ghideon Musa shared photos of Haddish applying for citizenship.

“My father is from Eritrea and he passed away last year—and he said one say I would end up here,” Haddish said at last year’s Oscars after being asked why she rocked a traditional Eritrean outfit

“He said that if I ever end up at the Oscars to honor my people, so I’m honoring my fellow Eritreans.”
