Pundits projected that the Kibra by-election would be the final nail in Raila Odinga’s political coffin, and that Deputy President William Ruto would be crowned the blue eyed boy of Nairobi politics.
In the end, ODM carried the day. It wasn’t even close.
The Kibra seat fell vacant following the death of Ken Okoth. ODM, Raila’s party, fielded Bernard Imran Okoth while Ruto’s Jubilee fielded former Inter Milan midfielder McDonald Mariga.
In a constituency with around 118,000 registered voters, less than 50% turned out to vote.
With 134 out of 183 precincts reporting, Imran Okoth had garnered 17,718 votes with the closest challenger, Mariga, managing 8,165 votes. Eliud Owalo of ANC polled at 3,837 votes.
