A Kenyan student at Harvard University has scored a rare victory after being elected students representative in the Faculty of Technology at Harvard. She will now be in charge of a crème de la crème 914 students.

Viona Shina Leboo who hails from Oloitokitok is a third-year student, pursuing education courtesy of Equity Bank’s Young Achievers program. She did her KCPE in 2010 and after a sterling performance managed to secure the competitive scholarship from Equity.

Viona says her dream is to save fellow Maa girls from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and enable them to follow in her footsteps of excellence.

At Harvard, Viona is concentrating in Economics with a secondary in Psychology. She is also a peer educator with the Harvard Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response.  Her favorite time of the year is during spring as she gets to relax outside without fear of the elements.

“My favorite thing about Harvard is the support that I get as a student whether it is in class or my house. I love Harvard, and hope that my enthusiasm will inspire someone else” she notes.
