After a poor start to the Africa Cup of Nations that saw Harambee Stars lose to Algeria 2-0 in the opening match, the Victor Wanyama-captained side struggled to find their footing against Tanzania, but overcame a slow start to win 3-2. The two goals conceded against the Taifa Stars may not have been viewed as costly then, but with Kenya losing to Senegal 3-0 in the final group match, it was down to goal difference, permutations and hope if Kenya was to make it to the round of 16.
In order to advance to the round of 16 as one of the 4 best third place finishers, Kenya’s hopes were pinned on Mali beating Angola, Ghana beating Guinea Bissau, and Cameroon winning against Benin. Kenya had 3 points with 3 goals scored and 7 conceded. Benin had 2 points with 2 goals scored and 2 goals conceded. In the end, Benin drew 0-0 with Cameroon and the result was enough to earn the team a point and a ticket to the round of 16 at the expense of Kenya.
So back the question-Has Harambee Stars qualified for the round of 16? The answer is NO!
Someone will ask, where do we go from here?
No one knows!
