An official with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is said to have killed himself just hours after overseeing voting in the recently concluded polls.
The official identified as Orenge Nyabicha was a presiding officer at the Imara Daima Polling centre in Nairobi’s Embakasi area.
The body of Nyabicha, a former sub-editor with The Standard, was found in his house in Quarry-Pipeline area on Saturday morning.
A postmortem conducted at the City Mortuary, where the body was taken by police, indicated Nyabicha died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
His relative said he retired to bed but on the following morning he was found dead in his house. He had lit a charcoal jiko and sealed all ventilation in the house in Pipeline area. He apparently suffocated from carbon monoxide emitted from the charcoal.
Police who arrived at the scene to pick his body found a suicide note which the Standard reports indicated he was frustrated by IEBC’s inability to deliver free and credible election.
The letter also read that the possibility of Kenya realising change was not feasible and that he was going to heaven to be “in the company of Mahatma Gandhi”.?
