IEBC finally announces when Kenyans will vote and the number of presidential candidates to expect on ballot papers

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set a date for the repeat presidential election as ordered by the Supreme Court on Friday last week.
IEBC has announced that the fresh presidential vote will only be between President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga and will be held on Tuesday, October 17.

The commission further added that only two candidates will be on the ballot papers.

It also said that the candidates have at least a month to campaign and according to a 2013 Supreme Court petition ruling, the winner will be determined by a simple majority.

Earlier, Education and acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct repeat election before October 17.

Matiang’i said this should happen so that the election does not affect national exams calendar adding that if the election is not held before the suggested date the entire exam calendar and indeed the learning calendar will be affected until 2018.
