Ivy Wangechi was in a relationship for a long time with her alleged killer Naftali Njahi Kinuthia, before her gruesome death according to the suspect’s mother.
Naftali’s mother, Nancy Kinuthia, told the Standard Media that the two were dating even before she joined campus but had been having issues before her death.
“They had been in a relationship even before my son got a job and the woman joined school. He even wanted to marry her, but it seems they began having issues,” Kinuthia said.
“Since then, the woman refused to pick his calls. That is what prompted him to travel from Thika to Eldoret. He said he wanted to know why she was ignoring him,” the DCI boss revealed.
In his Wednesday testimony to the Eldoret East DCI boss, Ali Kingi, Kinuthia claimed he had invested money and emotions in the woman, but his love and financial kindness wasn’t reciprocated as per his expectations.
“The accused said he used to send the woman some money. The girl, according to the suspect, had told him that she was organising her birthday party, which would happen soon. He said he sent her some money to arrange the event. Since then, the woman refused to pick his calls, said the suspect. That is what prompted him to travel [from Thika] to Eldoret. He said he wanted to know why she was ignoring him,” Eldoret East DCI boss Kingi said.
“When he [Kinuthia] arrived in Eldoret [Monday], the woman continued to decline to pick his calls. He said it got to a point where she switched off her phone. According to him, that angered him prompting him to look for an axe and kill the girl. We are still waiting for him to give more details after he is discharged from hospital,” said Kingi.
Kinuthia’s mother said that she has never met the lady in person but knew her from photos that her son had in his phone.
“I have never met the lady, but he used to show me her photos on phone… but recently, he came to me saying they had parted ways, a move which I told him was in the right direction because of their relationship issues,” the assailant’s mother.
“It is so unusual of him because he cannot do such an act. What perturbs me is that he did not share with anyone about his trip to Eldoret, yet we were with him yesterday in Nairobi at 8pm and he had not closed shop at a business where he works,” she said after the attack.
The 29-year-old who works for a betting firm is said to have travelled all the way from Thika to Eldoret in his car which he parked next to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) before proceeding to town on a boda boda where he bought an axe and knife.
